Uniroyal Tire Factory
The Samson Uniroyal Tire Factory was designed and built in 1930 by one of the greatest Los Angeles Art Deco architects Stiles O. Clements, this amazing reproduction of a Assyrian Palace served as the offices and walled facade for Uniroyal Tire. The factory sat right along the I 5 fwy in Los Angeles, and it also was used as a backdrop in the movie "Ben Hur" This building has been a LA landmark for over seventy five years.
Clements also was the designer and architect of these historic landmark buildings in LA and they include, The Mayan Theatre, El Capitan Theater Building, the great art deco Pellessier Building/Wiltern Theatre, the Richfield Tower which was tragically demolished in 1969 and so many others.......when Uniroyal stopped tire production here the property sat empty for many years until a group of investors knocked down the factory......saving the facade and offices and built a series of outlet stores behind the walls and the property today is called The Citadel
Old Uniroyal Tire building from 1929 (Citadel Outlet Factory)
In 1929 the Samson Tire and Rubber Company plant held their operations in this unique brick structure styled with Assyrian motifs. At the time, this building was left unpainted. Two years later, U.S. Tire Company bought out the business, and in 1962 the company was known as Uniroyal Tire. The plant closed in 1978 and the CIty of Commerce purchased the structure in 1983. In 1990, Citadel Factory Stores opened at this site, and had this facade painted. Photo taken by Daralee from the 5 Freeway on May 31, 2009.
